HORROR GENRE RESEARCH
CONVENTIONS OF HORROR:
"THE RING" CLIP ANALYSIS:
The opening to this film, The Ring, starts by using lengthy shots which create a sense of anticipation, as it does not allow the viewer to see everything that is happening in the scene. When mid shots of the women are used, the viewer is encouraged to feel frightened as they cannot see what the protagonist is seeing, yet they can see her reaction. As she seems frightened, the viewer becomes uncomfortable as they do not know what is causing the woman to feel this. This is also shown through camera movement, with the slow zoom at 45 seconds being an example.
a convention of the horror genre, the protagonist being 'dumb and clueless' is followed in this opening as the woman is shown to believe that another character is present however this is shown to be the supernatural being.
jump scares are also present, and one is used to end the scene, as the camera zooms in on the woman. the sudden zoom causes fear for the audience as they are not expecting the rush, and it is uncomfortable for the audience due to the sense of being up close to the screaming woman unnerves them, and the fear shown in the woman can transcend to the audience. the mise-en-scene is extremely important for the scene as the props used (the television, the fridge and the door handle) are objects which would be used by the audience n a day-to-day basis, and this causes the audience to take more notice and to feel more horrified at the occurences as they could picture themselves in this scene.

"CLOWN TEARS" CLIP ANALYSIS:
This titling sequence is for the horror genre, and was created by an AS Level group. The use of dim lighting throughout the sequence is used to create suspense and sets quite an eerie atmosphere for the viewer. The use of diagetic noise of the match being struck implies the idea of realism, making the viewer being a part of what is happening. This portrays the idea of the viewer being a key eye witness to a murder that is underway. The score is very dark and low toned which presents great uneasiness and this helps to suggest the genre of it being horror. The use of diagetic voice overs when individual, significant key words are said helps to create an effect upon the viewer, making them engrossed and questioning what is next to happen. The titling is shown at the start to be slow paced, which emphasises the spookiness to last long throughout the sequence. The titling is presented to be in white colour font, which implies the idea of innocence and with this relating to the storyline, suggests an innocent victim is going to be targeted. The main title of the movie is shown to be in big bold red font, and it is written in blood. This further highlights the death aspect of the storyline. The fast paced cutaways between shots of the newspaper clippings creates the idea of confusion and highlights a psychotic nature of the story line, due to the way things are shown to be planned out. The pictures of the girl around the room presents her as part of the main characters and it makes the viewer have sympathy for her knowing she is in a vulnerable position of death. The use of flashbacks is very effective as it shows the viewer a back story which leads to the current storyline. It creates a better sense of understanding and also from this, main characters are established. The close up of the clown presents the sense of horror and freakiness. The use of a clown is effective as they are normally represented with children, yet here is used in the alternative towards evil. The clown is stereotypically known to be a jolly figure of innocuous, yet here it is presented as the complete opposite of an evil and dark nature. When the picture of the girl is shown to be set alight, it highlights the key ideas of death to occur and how love was never meant to be with the character. It is very effective how the male character, who is suggested to be the killer, is never shown. This implies the hidden identity and secretiveness in his actions.
