ANIMATED GENRE RESEARCH
"THE PINK PANTHER" CLIP ANALYSIS:
Analysing this particular opening scene would help us with ideas we could use to input into our own titling opening scene we are making towards our AS coursework. This opening scene uses a very effective way to highlight the key genre and background plot of the storyline, through the use of its animation created by DePatie-Freleng Enterprises. It is presented being extremely interesting and energetic, which helps to grasp the viewer’s focus and also highlighting the nature of the target audience, being suitable for the younger viewers. The titling sequence starts off with a close up shot of a pink, sparkly diamond, which addresses to the viewer a clear understanding of its significance, especially through the sound that accompanies its entrance onto the screen. This helps to emphasis its purpose to the movie and shows the idea of it being the centre plot. Through the use of a constant blue and black background, at some points, this helps to show the idea of enigma and slyness. The idea that it all fades to black underlines the idea of obscurity, and a sense of a tense, unknown atmosphere. The genre is clearly established from the sequence through the fast paced action which suggests a detective, action, comedy themed movie. The sequence gives off a positive vibe and helps to foreshadow the movies atmosphere of a crime that has occurred. Also through the use of music, it conveys the genre as the score is mysterious and suspicious, which is presented through the trumpets used in the score. Through the titling, the music also changes from mysterious to romantic, which highlights a love natured theme that may take place in the movie, especially through the use of warm colours such as orange. The use of motion graphics are cleverly used, as it relates to the titling text in the sequence. An example can be seen when the “music by” titling appears, it is shown with the detective being caught off guard by music notes floating about. This creates the idea of flow and continuity in the titling, making it effective through the way they coexist with each other. The overall titling scene helps to highlight the whole plot of the movie, it being a detective trying to find where the anonymous pink panther is hiding and who it is. This can also be evidenced as in the sequence it shows the panther on a police line-up, which also highlights what the protagonist is searching for in the movie.
